Visiting the USA in April: Weather, Events & Travel Tips
April is one of the best months to visit the United States. Winter is over in the Northeast and Midwest. The South and Southwest are warm without summer’s heat. The West Coast is clear and dry. National parks in the Southwest and Rockies begin their accessible season. Prices haven’t yet reached summer peaks. If you’re flexible on timing, April is one of the most rewarding months to plan a US trip.

April in the Texas Hill Country (roughly San Antonio to Austin, west to Fredericksburg) is wildflower season — bluebonnets line roadsides from mid-March through mid-April. The display peaks around early-to-mid April depending on winter rainfall. Loop 1 through Marble Falls and Burnet is a reliable route to drive.
Major Events in April
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival — Indio, California Coachella runs across two consecutive weekends in mid-April at the Empire Polo Club (81800 Avenue 51, Indio). Weekend 1 tickets sell out well before the lineup is announced; Weekend 2 is often available longer. General admission passes typically run $499–$599 for the three-day weekend; VIP passes $1,100+. Car camping passes and shuttle packages sell separately. The festival draws around 125,000 attendees per weekend. Palm Springs (30 minutes away) is a good base; hotels there also surge during festival weekends.
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Jazz Fest runs across two consecutive weekends, typically late April through early May, at the Fair Grounds Race Course (1751 Gentilly Blvd, New Orleans). It covers far more than jazz: R&B, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, funk, and blues all feature. Day tickets run approximately $85–$105 (advance) or slightly more at the gate. Multiple stages run simultaneously all day. The food stalls at Jazz Fest — crawfish étouffée, cochon de lait, mango freeze — are a serious attraction on their own.
Boston Marathon — Patriots’ Day, Massachusetts The Boston Marathon is held on Patriots’ Day, the third Monday of April. The course runs from Hopkinton to Boylston Street in downtown Boston. Free to watch from anywhere along the route — Heartbreak Hill in Newton (miles 20–21) and the finish line on Boylston Street are traditional spectator spots. The race is by qualifying time or charity entry; spectating requires no ticket. Nearby hotels book out months in advance for race weekend.
Tribeca Film Festival — New York City Dates vary but typically fall in mid-to-late April across venues in lower Manhattan and the Hudson Yards area. Individual film screenings run $20–$35. Panel discussions and industry events carry higher badge prices. The festival mixes world premieres with short films, documentaries, and public talks.
Masters Tournament — Augusta, Georgia The Masters is held in early April at Augusta National Golf Club (2604 Washington Rd, Augusta). Getting tickets (badges) to the Masters is notoriously difficult — they are not sold publicly; most go through the club’s patron lottery system, which has a multi-year waiting list. Practice round tickets are occasionally available through the lottery. If you’re simply in the Augusta area, the city fills up and nearby Columbia, SC (70 miles away) is a viable base.
Where to Stay
New York City (April): April is good value relative to summer. The YOTEL New York (570 10th Ave) offers compact, smartly designed rooms from around $130/night. For more space: the citizenM New York Times Square (218 W 50th St) typically runs $150–$200/night and includes consistently fast Wi-Fi and a 24-hour bar.
New Orleans (Jazz Fest): Book early for Jazz Fest weekends. The Frenchmen Hotel (417 Frenchmen St) is a 10-minute walk from the Fair Grounds and sits above the live music strip in the Marigny — $200–$280/night during Jazz Fest. Off-festival April: rates drop to $150–$200/night.
Indio / Palm Springs (Coachella): The Saguaro Palm Springs (1800 E Palm Canyon Dr) is popular during Coachella — book many months ahead, expect $250–$400/night during festival weekends. A car is essential; Indio itself has limited accommodation.
Sedona, Arizona: April is prime season. El Portal Sedona (95 Portal Ln) is a luxury adobe-style inn from around $350/night. Mid-range: the Arabella Hotel Sedona (3928 N Highway 89A) from $200/night.
Where to Eat
New York City: The Halal Guys (W 53rd St & 6th Ave, the original cart) for a genuinely excellent chicken-and-rice plate around $8–$12. For a sit-down lunch, try Estela (47 E Houston St) — the anchovy toast and beef tartare are worth the $18–$24 per plate.
New Orleans (Jazz Fest): Eat at the Fest — the crawfish bread ($10), pheasant and andouille gumbo ($12), and cochon de lait po’boy ($14) at the food stalls inside the Fair Grounds are the benchmark. Outside the festival: Dooky Chase’s (2301 Orleans Ave) for Creole cooking, mains $25–$40.
Austin (April, pre-Jazz Fest): Uchi (801 S Lamar Blvd) is Austin’s best sushi restaurant and one of the best in the South. Omakase dinners run $85–$120; à la carte rolls $14–$22. Book at least a week ahead.
Sedona: Elote Café (771 Highway 179) is a destination in itself — contemporary Mexican with a genuine commitment to the cuisine. The eponymous elote (corn) starter is $12; mains run $22–$34. No reservations; expect a wait.
April Packing List
- Light jacket for evenings (temperatures drop in most regions after sunset)
- Rain jacket or compact umbrella — spring showers are common Northeast, Pacific Northwest, South
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+) — UV is noticeably stronger than winter across all regions
- Comfortable walking shoes — April is a heavy sightseeing month in most cities
- Layers — a T-shirt and a fleece can cover most April days in most US cities
- Festival-appropriate clothing if attending Coachella (light, layered — desert nights are cold even in April)
- Allergy medication — spring pollen is significant across the South and Midwest in April
- Hat and sunglasses — especially useful in desert and open-sky destinations
Practical Notes
April sits in a pricing sweet spot — winter rates have not yet transitioned to summer peaks, but the weather in most regions is genuinely good. The exception is festival weekends: Coachella and Jazz Fest push hotel and flight prices in their respective regions to summer-or-above levels for those specific dates.
National parks in the Southwest are increasingly busy from April onward. Arches National Park (near Moab, Utah) now requires a timed entry permit from April through October, purchased in advance through recreation.gov. Zion National Park similarly manages shuttle access. Check entry requirements before visiting — the rules change seasonally and are updated on the National Park Service website.
The East Coast is at its most photogenic in April — spring foliage in Central Park, the National Mall lawns turning green, Georgetown’s row houses with flowering trees. It’s a good month to walk cities that are less appealing in summer heat.
