Accommodation

Hotels in the USA: Where to Stay in Every City

The US accommodation market is enormous — from grand historic hotels in New York and New Orleans to ski lodges in the Rockies, beachfront resorts in Hawaii, and budget motels strung across Route 66. The quality-to-price ratio varies significantly by city, neighbourhood, and season.

Location matters more in the US than almost anywhere else. Staying outside the city centre typically means driving for everything — the US isn't a walkable country outside a handful of dense cities. We cover neighbourhood-level hotel recommendations for every major city, with honest notes on what you actually get for the price.

Types of Accommodation

Downtown Hotels

Major US cities concentrate their best mid-range and luxury hotels in the downtown core — walking distance from main sights, convention centres, and transit. Expect to pay $150–400/night in most cities; more in NYC, San Francisco, and DC. Parking is always extra ($40–80/day in city garages).

Resort Properties

US resorts cluster in Florida (Miami Beach, Orlando), Hawaii, Las Vegas, and ski destinations like Aspen and Vail. Las Vegas mega-resorts offer some of the best value-for-money accommodation in the country — large rooms, extensive amenities, and competitive rates outside peak periods.

Boutique Hotels

Cities like Nashville, New Orleans, Charleston, and Savannah have strong boutique hotel scenes — often in converted historic buildings. These typically have 20–80 rooms, distinct character, and more personal service than chain properties. Rates from $120–350/night.

Hostels & Budget Options

The US hostel scene is improving. Best options in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, and New York. Dorm beds run $30–65/night in most cities. Motels remain a practical US budget option — chains like Motel 6, Super 8, and Travelodge offer clean rooms from $60–110/night, particularly useful along road trips.
