Best Hotels in San Antonio
San Antonio’s hotel options divide into three clusters: the historic downtown (near the Alamo and River Walk), the Pearl District to the north, and the suburban highway corridors (most useful for families attending theme parks). The downtown River Walk hotels command premium rates for the walkable access to the Alamo and the river; the Pearl District’s Hotel Emma is consistently rated among the best hotels in Texas.
Luxury
Hotel Emma (136 E Grayson St, Pearl District) is a 146-room hotel in the converted 1894 Emma Koehler Brewhouse — the pearl of the Pearl Brewery complex. The name references Emma Koehler, who ran the brewery from her husband’s death in 1914 until Prohibition closed it. The building’s industrial bones — vaulted ceilings, cast iron details, the original copper brewing equipment preserved in common areas — are treated architecturally rather than as museum decoration. The rooms vary significantly; the Loft rooms in the original brewhouse have the most distinctive spaces.
The Supper restaurant and bar are destinations independent of the hotel. The Saturday and Sunday brunch is one of the most reserved tables in San Antonio.
Rooms from approximately $300–$500 per night as of 2026. Book directly at thehotelemma.com. Sells out on fiesta weekends and during summer peak.
Mokara Hotel & Spa (212 W Crockett St, River Walk) is a 99-room boutique hotel directly on the River Walk, with the most considered spa program of any River Walk property. The rooftop pool overlooks the river. Standard rooms from approximately $250–$400 per night.
The St. Anthony Hotel (300 E Travis St, downtown) is a 1909 National Historic Landmark, the first hotel in San Antonio to be air-conditioned (1934). The Peacock Alley lobby is one of the most formal hotel interiors in San Antonio. 352 rooms; standard from approximately $200–$320 per night.
River Walk
Hotel Contessa (306 W Market St) is a full-service River Walk property with 265 rooms and a rooftop pool. Some rooms have River Walk views. Standard rooms from approximately $175–$280 per night.
Marriott Rivercenter (101 Bowie St) is the largest River Walk hotel at over 1,000 rooms, directly connected to the Rivercenter Mall and adjacent to the Henry B. González Convention Center. Useful for conventions and for families wanting direct mall access. Standard rooms from approximately $150–$250 per night; spikes significantly during Fiesta San Antonio (April) and conventions.
Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk (123 Losoya St) is a large convention hotel on the River Walk, 632 rooms. Standard rooms from approximately $170–$270 per night.
Wyndham San Antonio Riverwalk (111 E Pecan St) is a mid-range River Walk option at 400 rooms. Standard rooms from approximately $140–$220 per night.
Historic and Boutique Downtown
Menger Hotel (204 Alamo Plaza) has stood across the street from the Alamo since 1859. The Victorian lobby, the carved mahogany bar (a replica of the bar in the House of Lords in London, which Theodore Roosevelt allegedly used when recruiting Rough Riders in 1898), and the oldest-continuously-operating hotel bar in Texas are the specific selling points.
316 rooms in the original building and various wings added over 150 years. The inconsistency between room types is significant — request the historic wing when booking. Standard rooms from approximately $150–$230 per night. The Alamo is 200 feet from the front door.
Hotel Valencia Riverwalk (150 E Houston St) is a 213-room boutique hotel with a contemporary design aesthetic on the River Walk. The Citrus Bar is the most design-forward hotel bar on the River Walk. Standard rooms from approximately $170–$260 per night.
Budget Options
O’Brien Historic Hotel (116 Navarro St, downtown) is a smaller independently operated property near the River Walk with rooms from approximately $90–$140 per night. The most affordable downtown option with genuine historic character.
Holiday Inn Express & Suites San Antonio Riverwalk Area (100 Lexington Ave) runs approximately $120–$175 per night — reliable midrange with walking distance to the River Walk.
La Quinta Inn & Suites San Antonio Market Square (900 Dolorosa St) is located near Market Square and the River Walk, approximately $100–$155 per night.
Retama Manor near Six Flags / SeaWorld: For families attending theme parks, clusters of hotel chains along IH-10 West (near Six Flags Fiesta Texas) run approximately $80–$130 per night with free parking and shuttle services to the parks.
Choosing a Neighborhood
River Walk / Downtown (Menger, Mokara, Marriott Rivercenter, Hotel Contessa): Maximum walkability to the Alamo, River Walk restaurant circuit, Market Square, and the convention center. River Walk views come at a premium; rooms without River Walk views are often available at lower rates in the same properties.
Pearl District (Hotel Emma): The best restaurant access in San Antonio, the Saturday farmers’ market, and the Museum Reach of the River Walk heading south toward downtown (approximately 25-minute walk or short rideshare). Less convenient for Alamo access than downtown hotels.
Historic Downtown (St. Anthony, Menger, Hotel Valencia): Proximity to Alamo, the River Walk, and the San Fernando Cathedral. Most of the major downtown cultural sites are within walking distance.
