Best Hotels in Austin: Where to Stay by Neighbourhood

Boutique hotel courtyard with a pool surrounded by tropical plants on South Congress Avenue in Austin

Austin’s hotel market is one of the most volatile in the United States for pricing, driven by two events that compress supply dramatically: South by Southwest (SXSW, mid-March) and Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL, two weekends in October). During SXSW, properties that run approximately $200/night in February may list at $700–$1,200; the same pattern applies during ACL. Book 4–6 months ahead for these periods, or accept that you’ll be staying outside the city and ridesharing in. All prices below reflect approximate off-peak rates as of 2026.

Downtown

The Driskill Hotel (604 Brazos St) — Austin’s most historic hotel, open continuously since December 1886. The Romanesque limestone facade dominates a full city block on Brazos Street; the interior features an ornate lobby with stained-glass dome, Victorian furniture, and portraits of Texas governors. The hotel has been central to Texas political life — Lyndon Johnson proposed to Lady Bird here in 1934. 189 rooms from approximately $240 per night; the Driskill Bar is one of the city’s best hotel bars and is open to non-guests. Walking distance to the Capitol, the Convention Center, and the Sixth Street entertainment district.

Fairmont Austin (101 Red River St) — the largest hotel in Austin at 1,048 rooms, positioned adjacent to the Convention Center and across from the convention center annex. Rooms from approximately $220 per night. The pool deck is one of the most impressive hotel amenity areas downtown. The Garrison restaurant serves Texas-sourced cooking; Austin Proper Spa is connected to the property. Good for convention attendees; for independent travellers, the immediate neighbourhood lacks the texture of South Congress or East Sixth.

W Austin (200 Lavaca St) — a lifestyle hotel adjacent to the Austin City Limits Live venue (the Moody Center is a separate arena; ACL Live at the Moody Theater at 310 W Willie Nelson Blvd is the show-taping venue). 251 rooms from approximately $280 per night. Wet bar rooftop pool; the Living Room bar has live music programming most evenings.

Hampton Inn Austin Downtown (200 San Jacinto Blvd) — the most reliable budget option in the downtown core. Rooms from approximately $140 per night including breakfast. Clean, functional, and well-positioned for walking to the Capitol and Sixth Street. Parking in the attached garage runs approximately $30 per day.

South Congress Avenue

Hotel San José (1316 S Congress Ave) — a 1939 motor court converted into a 40-room boutique property. The rooms are compact and simply furnished — the appeal is the courtyard pool, the South Congress location, and the vibe rather than the room size. From approximately $200 per night. The poolside bar opens in late afternoon; Jo’s Coffee, operating from the hotel’s parking lot, is one of the city’s most beloved coffee spots and a good reason to stay here. Adults-preferred atmosphere; dogs welcome.

Hotel Saint Cecilia (112 Academy Dr) — the most acclaimed boutique hotel in Austin and one of the most distinctive small hotels in Texas. 14 total rooms and bungalows in a converted 1888 Victorian mansion; the property has a pool, a library stocked with art books and vinyl records, and cocktail service from a dedicated bar. From approximately $400 per night; suites from approximately $600. Adults only (21+). The hotel curates a guest profile — more musician and creative industry than corporate — and the atmosphere reflects this. Book well in advance for any weekend.

South Congress Hotel (1603 S Congress Ave) — a larger boutique property (83 rooms) anchoring the southern end of the S Congress strip. Rooms from approximately $250 per night; the Central Standard cocktail bar in the lobby is one of the neighbourhood’s better evening destinations. The complimentary cruiser bikes for guest use are genuinely useful for navigating South Austin.

East Austin

Firehouse Hostel & Museum (605 Brazos St, Downtown/East boundary) — a converted 1885 fire station with private rooms from approximately $75 and dorm beds from approximately $35. The museum section displays original fire department equipment. One of Austin’s better budget options; the location is better than the price point suggests.

Aloft Austin East (1209 E 7th St) — a mid-range chain property on the East Sixth corridor, convenient for the music venues and restaurants on that strip. Rooms from approximately $140 per night. Rooftop bar; small pool.

Carpenter Hotel (400 Josephine St, near South Lamar) — a motel-style boutique hotel near the South Lamar and Barton Springs corridor. 93 rooms from approximately $165 per night; courtyard pool; strong breakfast at the connected restaurant (breakfast plates approximately $12–$18).

Domain and North Austin

The Domain (US-183 and MoPac, approximately 9 miles north of downtown) is Austin’s north suburban commercial centre, with large hotels serving the tech corridor companies (Apple, Dell, IBM, Oracle campuses are all within a few miles).

Archer Austin (3121 Palm Way) — a boutique hotel in the Domain with a rooftop pool and bar; rooms from approximately $200 per night. More interesting than the standard chain properties in the area. Useful for visitors with business in North Austin; less convenient for downtown sightseeing.

Marriott Austin Domain (11901 Domain Blvd) — a large convention-capable property in the Domain. Rooms from approximately $180 per night. The Topgolf driving range is adjacent (30 bays, approximately $30–$50 per hour depending on time).

Booking Tips

SXSW (March): The city sells out its hotel inventory by December for the following March. If you’re planning a SXSW trip without advance booking by November, plan on staying in Round Rock, Cedar Park, or Georgetown (suburban areas 15–25 miles out) and ridesharing in. Rates in these suburbs also increase during SXSW, just less dramatically.

ACL Festival (two October weekends): Similar dynamics, slightly less extreme than SXSW. Book by August for October weekend stays.

Formula 1 (United States Grand Prix, November): The Circuit of the Americas (COTA), 10 miles southeast of downtown, hosts the US Grand Prix annually in November. Hotel rates across the metro spike for race weekend; book 4–6 months ahead.

Airport to hotel: No rail exists from AUS airport to downtown; plan for approximately $25–$35 rideshare to downtown hotels. The CapMetro 20 Airport Flyer bus (approximately $1.25) takes 40 minutes to Republic Square Park downtown — acceptable with light bags.

Parking: Austin traffic and parking makes driving in the downtown core inefficient. Most downtown hotels charge approximately $30–$45 per day for parking. South Congress hotels have more relaxed parking situations; Barton Springs road access is generally easier than the downtown grid.
