Las Vegas Airport Transfer: LAS to the Strip & Downtown
Harry Reid International Airport (LAS, formerly McCarran) has one remarkable advantage over most major US airports: it’s extraordinarily close to the main hotel strip. The distance from the terminal to Mandalay Bay at the south end of the Strip is less than 2 miles. For most hotels, you’re looking at a 10–25 minute transfer rather than the 45–90 minutes of a JFK or LAX run.
Pre-Booked Private Transfer
Even for a short drive, a pre-booked private transfer is worth considering in Las Vegas — particularly if you’re arriving late at night when the atmosphere is lively and your priority is getting checked in efficiently.
Book a Welcome Pickups transfer — meets you at baggage claim, handles luggage, fixed price. In Las Vegas, the driver can also bring you directly to the hotel entrance (not always obvious in the labyrinthine Strip resort driveways).

Approximate private transfer prices from LAS:
| Destination | Standard Sedan | Minivan (up to 7) |
|---|---|---|
| South Strip (Mandalay Bay, MGM, New York-New York) | $25–45 | $40–65 |
| Mid-Strip (Bellagio, Caesars, Venetian, Wynn) | $35–55 | $55–80 |
| North Strip / Strat / Sahara | $45–65 | $65–90 |
| Downtown Fremont Street | $45–65 | $65–90 |
| Henderson / Summerlin (off-Strip resorts) | $55–80 | $80–120 |
Taxi from Las Vegas Airport
Las Vegas taxis are metered and regulated. Fares are reasonable given the short distances involved.
Important: Until 2017, taxis were notorious for “long-hauling” passengers through the freeway tunnel instead of the direct surface route. This practice now carries heavy fines. If your driver takes the freeway tunnel, you should be aware you’ll be charged tunnel and freeway tolls on top of the meter. The direct surface route to mid-Strip is typically cheaper.
Approximate metered fares from LAS:
- South Strip (Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, T-Mobile Arena): $15–22
- Mid-Strip (Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Venetian): $20–30
- North Strip (Wynn, Encore, Strat): $28–40
- Downtown Las Vegas / Fremont Street: $30–45
Add 15–20% tip. The taxi queue at the airport is well-organized and move quickly at most hours. During weekend peak arrivals (Thursday and Friday evenings), expect a short wait.
Rideshare: Uber and Lyft
Uber and Lyft pick up from the designated rideshare zone on Level Zero of the terminal. Follow signs for “Rideshare” from the baggage claim area.
Typical costs under standard conditions:
- South Strip: $12–20
- Mid-Strip: $15–25
- North Strip: $20–35
- Downtown / Fremont: $25–40
Las Vegas rideshare pricing is generally competitive and surge events are less dramatic than coastal cities — unless a major convention, fight weekend, or concert is in town. When the NASCAR Cup Series, a boxing championship, or an EDC festival brings 100,000+ extra visitors to the city, rideshare demand multiplies and pricing follows. In those windows, a pre-booked transfer locks in your price.
Monorail
The Las Vegas Monorail runs along the back of the Strip from MGM Grand (south) to the Las Vegas Convention Center (north). However, it does not connect to the airport — the closest station is MGM Grand, which is still about 1.5 miles from the terminal.
A taxi or rideshare to MGM Grand, then the monorail to your resort, is a viable option if your hotel is on the monorail corridor and you’re traveling light. Single ride: approximately $5; day pass: approximately $13.
RTC Deuce Bus (Budget Option)
The RTC Deuce bus runs 24 hours along the Strip and connects to the airport via Route 109 (Maryland Pkwy).
- From the airport: Take the free shuttle bus to the Rental Car Center, then Route 109 to the bus transfer point, then the Deuce to the Strip
- Fare: approximately $6 for a 2-hour pass, $8 for 24 hours
- Journey time: 45–75 minutes to mid-Strip depending on traffic and connections
The Deuce is popular with budget travelers and runs frequently. With luggage and a Vegas-bound excitement level, most people opt for something faster — but it works.
Getting to Downtown Las Vegas / Fremont Street
The Downtown area (Fremont Street Experience, Circa, Golden Nugget, Plaza) is about 8 miles from the airport — further than most Strip hotels.
- Taxi: $30–45
- Rideshare: $20–35 off-peak
- Pre-booked transfer: $45–65 for a sedan
There’s no direct transit link. The RTC SDX (Strip and Downtown Express) connects the Strip to Downtown for $2 — useful if you’re connecting from a Strip hotel, not directly from the airport.
Practical Tips for Las Vegas Airport Transfers
The short distance makes cabs very price-competitive. Unlike NYC or LA where rideshares often undercut taxis, in Las Vegas the metered taxi fare to most Strip hotels is low enough that the difference with a rideshare is modest. Use whichever is available fastest.
Check for major events before booking. Las Vegas hosts Formula 1 (November), multiple championship boxing events, EDC, and the largest conventions in the US (CES in January, SEMA in November). All of these generate rideshare surges. Check the Las Vegas Events calendar before your trip and pre-book if a major event coincides with your arrival.
Summer heat is real. June through September temperatures regularly exceed 105°F (41°C). Even the short walk to a taxi in the surface parking can be brutal. The terminal to taxi queue is covered; the walk from an off-site rideshare lot is not.
Resort fees are charged at check-in, not by your transfer driver. Las Vegas hotels charge mandatory resort fees of $30–50 per night on top of the room rate. This is unrelated to your transfer cost but worth knowing before you arrive.
