Glacier, Rocky Mountain and Grand Teton Roads Closing for the Season

Going-to-the-Sun Road through Glacier National Park in autumn

Three of the most popular national parks in the American West are closing major roads for the season this week, with conditions moving faster than usual at higher elevations. Visitors planning autumn trips to Glacier, Rocky Mountain, or Grand Teton should check closures before they travel.

Glacier: Going-to-the-Sun Road Closes by October 19

The alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road - one of the most scenic drives in North America - closed temporarily on October 9 after the National Weather Service forecast periods of heavy snow, blowing snow, and 65 mph wind gusts above Logan Pass. The National Park Service reopened the section once conditions improved, but the permanent seasonal closure is scheduled for the third Monday of October, which falls on October 19, 2026.

After October 19, the Logan Pass corridor between Avalanche and Jackson Glacier Overlook will be closed to vehicles for the winter. Lower sections near the West Entrance remain open year-round. Visitors still have a narrow window to drive the full road before the deadline.

Rocky Mountain: Old Fall River Road Closed for Maintenance

Rocky Mountain National Park’s Old Fall River Road - a one-way unpaved route that climbs to Fall River Pass - closed to vehicles on October 6. A further maintenance closure runs from October 13 to 16, with no vehicle access during that window. Trail Ridge Road remains the primary alpine route across the park, though it too closes for the season once sustained snowfall makes it impassable, typically by mid-to-late October.

Visitors planning to drive Old Fall River Road should note this season has ended.

Grand Teton: Road Delays and Multiple Closures

Grand Teton is managing a complex set of access restrictions through November. The Moose-Wilson Road between Moose and the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve has been closed since September 8 and will not reopen until November 15. Death Canyon Road and Trailhead are also closed.

Highway construction on the main corridor (Hwy 26/89/191) is adding 20-minute delays with roundabout work pushing waits up to 40 minutes at peak times. Factor in extra driving time for any trip through the park.

Planning Around Closures

If you’re visiting these parks this month, a few practical steps help:

  • Check the NPS alerts page for each park before you drive - closures can shift by 24–48 hours depending on weather.
  • Plan to explore lower-elevation trails and visitor centres, which stay accessible through late autumn.
  • An America the Beautiful Pass covers entry to all three parks and remains valid through the off-season for any accessible areas.
  • Accommodation in gateway towns - West Glacier, Estes Park, and Jackson - books up quickly around foliage season even as road access reduces.
