Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX) is the third-busiest airport in the United States and one of the major gateways to the West Coast. It sits roughly 25 kilometres southwest of Downtown Los Angeles, 15 kilometres from Hollywood, and about 5 kilometres from Santa Monica and Venice Beach. In a city where traffic is practically a civic institution, getting your transfer strategy right matters — the wrong choice at the wrong time can add an hour to a journey that should take 25 minutes.
Airport Layout
LAX has nine terminals arranged in a horseshoe. Terminals 1–8 handle domestic flights; the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) handles most international arrivals. All terminals connect via a free people mover called the Automated People Mover (APM), which opened in 2023. The APM connects all terminals to three stations: Rental Car Center, Economy Parking/Metro, and LAX City Bus Center. Metro Rail — Cheapest Option to Downtown and Beyond
The Los Angeles Metro now connects to LAX via the APM system. From the 96th St/Aviation Metro Station (reached via APM from any terminal), you can take:
- Metro C Line (Green Line): East toward Norwalk or west toward Redondo Beach
- Metro A Line (Blue Line) connection via El Segundo: Downtown LA via the Blue Line/A Line
A more direct route to Downtown uses the C Line to the E Line (Expo) connection at Crenshaw/LAX Station.

- To Downtown LA (7th St/Metro Center): approximately 45–65 minutes, $2.50
- To Santa Monica (4th/Colorado): approximately 50–70 minutes via E Line, $2.50

Metro is Los Angeles’s most affordable transfer option. It runs from approximately 04:00 to 01:00 daily (05:00–00:00 on some lines). The flat $2.50 fare covers the entire journey regardless of distance. TAP cards are available at the APM station vending machines. The system is well-signed and English-first throughout.
The trade-off: multiple transfers and travel times that exceed most road options during off-peak hours. Metro works well for Downtown-bound travellers and those heading to the Westside who don’t mind the journey.
FlyAway Bus — Fast and Comfortable Fixed Routes
The LAX FlyAway is a non-stop express bus service operated by Los Angeles World Airports. Buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and luggage-friendly — you do not need to haul bags up stairs or fight for space. Boarding is from the LAX City Bus Center, reached via the APM.

- LAX → Union Station (Downtown LA): approximately $9.75, 30–45 minutes (off-peak), departs frequently
- LAX → Van Nuys: approximately $11.75, 40–60 minutes

From Union Station, the Metro rail system connects to most of central LA, Pasadena, Long Beach, and beyond. FlyAway buses run 24 hours on the Union Station route — particularly useful for late-night arrivals. Purchase tickets online or at the kiosk at the Bus Center.
For most travellers landing at LAX and heading to central or east-side LA, the FlyAway to Union Station is the best balance of cost, reliability, and comfort.
Rideshare — Uber and Lyft from the APM
Uber and Lyft operate from LAX but not from terminal curbs. You must take the APM to the LAX-it lot, located off the Century Boulevard loop. The app will direct you there once your ride is booked — open the app inside the terminal after clearing customs, and your driver will be assigned to a numbered spot at the LAX-it lot.

Licensed Taxi — Metered Curbside at LAX-it
Traditional metered taxis depart from the LAX-it lot alongside rideshares. Major operators include Yellow Cab, Checker Cab, and United Taxicab. Fares are metered plus a $4 airport surcharge as of 2026.

Pre-booked private transfers provide a fixed confirmed price, a driver waiting in arrivals with your name, and direct door-to-door service — no APM, no LAX-it lot, no app required. This is the most practical option for group travel, business trips, or anyone arriving tired on a red-eye from Europe or Asia.
Operators including Kiwitaxi, Welcome Pickups, and GetTransfer offer English-language booking with flight tracking and free waiting time for delays.

Car Rental — LAX Has a Dedicated Center
The Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC) at LAX is one of the largest in the world, located off the 96th Street on-ramp and reached directly via the APM from any terminal. All major rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, National, Dollar, Thrifty, Alamo) have counters there.
For travellers planning road trips along Pacific Coast Highway, to Joshua Tree, or up to Big Sur, picking up a car at LAX is efficient. Compare rental rates before arriving — airport counters at LAX can be significantly more expensive than off-airport alternatives booked in advance.
Practical Tips
- The APM is mandatory for all rideshares and buses. This is the biggest change at LAX in recent years. Budget 10–15 minutes from terminal exit to APM station when planning connections.
- Traffic on the 405 and 10 freeways can be severe. The worst windows are 07:00–09:30 and 16:30–19:30 on weekdays. If possible, avoid scheduling critical arrivals during these periods.
- Hollywood and Westside are not the same direction. Santa Monica is west; Hollywood is north. Confirm your destination district with any driver before setting off.
- LAX to Disneyland: Anaheim is approximately 40–50 minutes from LAX (off-peak), about 65–90 minutes during heavy traffic. A direct private transfer avoids the need to route through Downtown. Typical cost: approximately $85–120 as of 2026.
