Peak Season: February–March (Rodeo)

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo runs for approximately three weeks from late February through mid-March at NRG Stadium. It is the largest livestock exhibition and rodeo in the world, drawing approximately 2.5 million visitors annually. The event combines traditional rodeo competition, a concert series (artists from country, pop, R&B, and rock perform nightly to 70,000+ audiences), barbecue competitions, and livestock shows. Hotel rates near NRG Park increase sharply, and Uber/Lyft surge during show nights. This is Houston at its most distinctly Texan - worth experiencing once.

April is a secondary peak as the weather is at its best - temperatures of 20–25°C before the summer heat sets in - and the Houston Marathon typically falls in January, drawing runners and spectators alike.

Shoulder Season: October–November and April

October is an excellent month. Temperatures drop to a comfortable 22–26°C, humidity decreases significantly, and the city’s arts calendar opens its fall season. The Bayou City Art Festival in October is one of the largest outdoor arts events in Texas. The Museum District - which includes 19 museums in a walkable area, most free or low-cost - is at its most pleasant for exploration on foot.

November is relaxed and affordable. Thanksgiving creates some travel pressure, but midmonth is quiet. The Houston International Jazz Festival runs in November, and restaurant season shifts into its best gear as Houston’s diverse dining scene - widely considered the most culinarily diverse city in the US - ramps up with fall menus.

Off Season: June–September

Houston summer is extreme. The Gulf Coast location means humidity frequently reaches 85–95%, and the combination with 33–35°C temperatures creates heat indexes regularly above 40°C. Outdoor time is limited to early morning and evening. The Museum District, Houston Galleria, and the indoor Space Center Houston are genuinely excellent alternatives during the hottest hours. Flooding from Gulf tropical systems has become a more frequent summer concern - check weather forecasts if visiting June through September.
