American Airlines announced three new transatlantic routes from Philadelphia International Airport on 27 August 2026, opening daily nonstop service to Porto (Portugal), Vienna (Austria), and Reykjavik (Iceland) for summer 2027. Tickets go on sale from 31 August at AA.com.

The Three New Routes

Philadelphia to Porto launches on 28 March 2027, operated daily on an Airbus A321XLR. Porto is Portugal’s second city - smaller and less crowded than Lisbon, with one of Europe’s most rewarding wine cultures (Port wine country begins practically at its doorstep) and a dense, walkable historic centre.

Philadelphia to Vienna begins on 6 May 2027, also on the A321XLR. American says it will be the only US airline flying nonstop to Vienna, a city that draws visitors for its coffee houses, imperial architecture, and proximity to Hungary and the Czech Republic. The route will run through early January 2028 to capture Christmas market season.

Philadelphia to Reykjavik launches on 27 May 2027, operated on an Airbus A321neo. This route was previously announced in 2019 but cancelled before it could launch due to the pandemic - it finally takes off next year.

All three routes operate daily with a seasonal summer/autumn schedule.

Why Philadelphia Matters as a Hub

Philadelphia is increasingly being positioned by American Airlines as its East Coast transatlantic gateway, complementing JFK and Boston. For travellers in the mid-Atlantic states - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland - Philadelphia offers a realistic alternative to driving to New York or Washington for long-haul flights. The airport is well connected by regional rail from Center City, and Amtrak connects it to New York and Washington in under 90 minutes.

The A321XLR is a new long-range narrowbody that makes thinner transatlantic routes economically viable - which is precisely why these smaller-city European destinations are becoming possible direct from Philadelphia rather than requiring a connection in London or Madrid.

Who These Routes Suit

The Porto and Reykjavik routes, in particular, serve independent travellers who might otherwise be deterred by the connections and extra time involved in reaching those destinations. Porto is a natural add-on for East Coast travellers with wider Europe plans, and Reykjavik sits within reach of Iceland’s ring road and geothermal landscapes.
