More than 1,100 flights were cancelled across the United States on 19 July 2026 as storm systems moved across major aviation corridors, triggering FAA ground stops and cascading disruptions at hub airports. The figure of 1,119 confirmed cancellations makes it one of the largest single-day disruption events in US aviation so far this summer.

What Happened

The disruption began in the afternoon hours on 19 July as convective weather systems developed across the eastern seaboard and the midwest. Ground stops were issued at several high-traffic hubs, causing rapid cancellation waves as inbound aircraft could not land and outbound flights lost their slots.

Airports reporting the heaviest cancellation rates included those in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas - four of the busiest connecting hubs in the US system. When a major hub goes offline even briefly, the knock-on effect for passengers on connecting itineraries can last 24–48 hours as aircraft and crews reposition.

American Airlines, Delta, United, and Southwest - which together account for the majority of US domestic capacity - all issued travel waivers by the evening of 19 July, allowing affected passengers to rebook without change fees.

However, major US carriers are contractually obligated under their own conditions of carriage to rebook you on the next available flight at no charge.
