San Francisco is compact for a major US city - most neighborhoods are connected by Muni and BART - but the hills and microclimates mean neighborhood choice matters more than it might seem. Union Square is the tourist hotel center, but the Mission, SOMA, and Pacific Heights all offer distinct experiences. Property values and hotel rates are high across the board; mid-range here is expensive by most US cities’ standards.

Union Square and Downtown

Union Square is San Francisco’s primary hotel district, with the widest range of properties at every price point and the best transit connections. The cable car turntable at Powell and Market is walking distance from most Union Square hotels, and BART at Powell station connects you to the airport and East Bay in minutes.

The Westin St. Francis - 335 Powell Street, Union Square. A San Francisco institution since 1904. The Main Building has classic city views; the Tower Building has larger, more modern rooms. The lobby clock is a traditional meeting point. From approximately $280/night as of 2026.

Marker Hotel, Union Square - 501 Geary Street. A mid-range boutique option a block from Union Square with a lively lobby bar. From approximately $180/night - one of the better value options in the neighborhood.

Hotel Zetta - 55 Fifth Street, SOMA. A Viceroy Hotel with a gaming parlor and strong design sensibility. Between Union Square and SOMA; close to the Moscone Convention Center. From approximately $190/night.

Nob Hill and the Financial District

Nob Hill sits above Union Square, historically the address of San Francisco’s railroad barons. The Fairmont and the Ritz-Carlton anchor the neighborhood, and the views over the city and bay from upper-floor rooms are among the best in SF.

Fairmont San Francisco - 950 Mason Street, Nob Hill. The grandest of San Francisco’s great hotels, open since 1907. The Crown Room on the 24th floor has 360-degree panoramic views. The Tonga Room in the basement is a famous tiki bar with indoor rainstorms. From approximately $350/night.

The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco - 600 Stockton Street. A neoclassical building on the corner of Nob Hill, quieter and more intimate than the Fairmont. From approximately $450/night.

Fisherman’s Wharf and the Waterfront

Fisherman’s Wharf is the city’s most tourist-oriented neighborhood - Pier 39, the ferry to Alcatraz, and Ghirardelli Square are all within walking distance. It is further from downtown restaurants and nightlife but has direct access to the Embarcadero waterfront and the Golden Gate ferry.

Hotel Vitale - 8 Mission Street, Embarcadero. A waterfront boutique hotel with rooftop hot tubs and bay views from upper floors. The Embarcadero BART and Ferry Building are steps away. From approximately $250/night.

The St. Regis San Francisco - 125 Third Street, SOMA. Adjacent to SFMOMA and Yerba Buena Gardens, with butler service and one of the better hotel spas in the city. From approximately $500/night.

The Mission and Castro

The Mission is San Francisco’s most vibrant dining and bar neighborhood - Valencia Street and 24th Street have the city’s best restaurant density. It is also the warmest neighborhood (sheltered from the Pacific fog). Hotels are limited but the area is served by BART at 16th and 24th Street.

Hotel San Francisco Proper - 1100 Market Street, Civic Center/Market. A Liz Lambert-designed property in a 1909 Beaux-Arts building bridging Civic Center and the Upper Tenderloin, with strong food and beverage offerings and warm, eclectic interiors. From approximately $220/night.

Booking Tips

San Francisco hotel rates peak in summer (July and August), during major tech conferences (Dreamforce in September, Apple WWDC in June), and around Bay to Breakers and the San Francisco Marathon. September and October offer the best combination of weather and rates. Book two to three months ahead for summer. Airport (SFO) hotels are significantly cheaper than downtown - a practical choice if you have an early departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best neighborhood to stay in San Francisco for tourists?
Union Square is the most convenient base for first-time visitors - walkable to the cable car turntable, BART and Muni connections, and dozens of restaurants within a few blocks. The Tenderloin (immediately west of Union Square) has safety concerns; walk on Geary, Post, and Sutter rather than through the blocks below Turk Street at night.
How cold is San Francisco in summer?
San Francisco's famous microclimates mean summer (June through August) is often cooler than spring and fall, particularly in neighborhoods facing the Pacific (Richmond, Sunset, and Ocean Beach). The Fog Season runs from May through July and temperatures can stay in the low 60s Fahrenheit. September and October are typically the warmest and clearest months.
Is San Francisco easy to get around without a car?
Yes - BART (the subway system) connects the airport to downtown and East Bay cities. Muni (buses and light rail) covers most of the city. Cable cars connect the Financial District to Fisherman's Wharf and run up Powell Street. The city is hilly; some routes that look walkable on a map are steep climbs. Cycling is practical along the flat Embarcadero and in the Mission.
