San Antonio is one of the most visited cities in Texas, driven by the Alamo, the River Walk, and a genuinely rich Spanish Colonial and Texas history. The city center is compact and walkable by Texas standards - the River Walk loops below street level through the downtown core, the Alamo is two blocks away, and the King William Historic District and the Pearl are within easy walking distance. Most visitors base themselves downtown and the choice is really about atmosphere and price level rather than access.

River Walk and Downtown
The River Walk runs 15 miles total but the visitor-focused section is the downtown loop between Nueva Street and West Commerce Street. Hotels directly on the water command a premium; those a few blocks away on Commerce, Navarro, or Pecan Streets are often 20 to 30 percent less for comparable quality. The Alamo is a five-minute walk from most River Walk hotels.
Hotel Emma - 136 E Grayson Street, Pearl District. Set in a 1894 brewhouse - the original Pearl Brewery - Hotel Emma is one of the most distinctive hotel conversions in Texas. The Larder & The Delta restaurant is excellent, and the bar is a neighborhood gathering point. From approximately $380/night as of 2026.
The Westin Riverwalk San Antonio - 420 W Market Street, River Walk. One of the best mainstream hotel options directly on the River Walk - good-sized rooms, reliable service, and an outdoor terrace facing the water. Close to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. From approximately $200/night.
Hyatt Regency San Antonio - 123 Losoya Street, directly on the River Walk. A large convention hotel with multiple restaurants and direct River Walk access. The atrium lobby has views across the water. From approximately $200/night - a reliable midrange option for larger groups.
Pearl District
The Pearl sits about a mile north of the Alamo along the Museum Reach section of the River Walk. The 22-acre redevelopment of the 1894 Pearl Brewery is now San Antonio’s best food and market destination - the Pearl Farmers Market (Saturday and Sunday) and the cluster of restaurants from James Beard-nominated chefs make this the most interesting neighborhood in the city for food-focused visitors.
Hotel Emma is the only hotel directly in the Pearl. The Museum Reach water taxi connects the Pearl to the downtown River Walk in about 15 minutes (operates seasonally, approximately $15 round trip).
King William Historic District
King William is San Antonio’s grandest historic neighborhood, 10 minutes’ walk south of the Alamo along the King William Street corridor. Victorian mansions built by German merchant families in the 1870s and 1880s line the quiet streets; several have been converted into bed-and-breakfast properties. Quieter and more residential than the River Walk zone.
Hotel Havana - 1015 Navarro Street, on the River Walk just north of King William. A 1914 Mediterranean Revival building with 27 rooms, each individually designed. Ocho bar and restaurant on the ground floor is a neighborhood gathering point. From approximately $180/night - one of the most atmospheric small hotels in the city.
Mokara Hotel & Spa - 212 W Crockett Street, River Walk. A boutique luxury property on the river with a rooftop pool overlooking the San Antonio skyline. The spa is one of the best in the downtown area. From approximately $280/night.

Booking tips
Fiesta San Antonio (ten days in late April) is the single event that books the city solid - reserve three to four months ahead if your trip overlaps. Riverfest and the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo (February) also generate spikes. Otherwise, book two to four weeks ahead for weekends. Room rates on the River Walk typically run 15 to 25 percent higher than comparable rooms a few blocks inland - the surcharge is for the view and the walk to restaurants, not the room quality. Consider staying a block off the water to save noticeably.
