TCS New York City Marathon 2026

The TCS New York City Marathon is the world’s largest marathon by field size, with over 50,000 finishers crossing the line in Central Park each first Sunday in November. In 2026 that falls on November 1. The race was first run in 1970 with just 55 participants, all completing loops of Central Park. The five-borough course — crossing from Staten Island through Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan — was introduced in 1976 and remains the route today.

The course

The race starts at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Staten Island, the longest crossing on the course and the most dramatic opening of any major marathon. Runners cross into Brooklyn and run north through Bay Ridge, Park Slope, and Williamsburg, crossing the Pulaski Bridge into Queens, then moving through Long Island City. A turn north takes the field into the Bronx before the final push south through Harlem and down Fifth Avenue into Central Park, finishing near Tavern on the Green.

Spectating

The marathon is a superb spectator event, made easier by the fact that the course passes through dozens of accessible neighbourhoods across four boroughs. First Avenue in Manhattan (miles 16-18) is traditionally the loudest and most electric stretch for supporters. Subway access near the course is good; the 4/5/6 trains run parallel to First Avenue. Central Park near the finish line fills from mid-morning; arrive early for a good position.

The race starts in three waves from around 8am; elite women lead off, followed by elite men, then the open field in waves. Most runners cross the finish line between 10am and 4pm.

Entering the race

Entry is via a lottery that opens each January. Standard entry in recent years has cost approximately $255-$295 for US residents and more for international runners (as of 2026). Charity entries and international tour operator packages are available for those who do not secure a lottery spot. The demand for entries far exceeds the available field.
