Kauai’s food scene is smaller in scale than Maui or Oahu’s but has a genuine character of its own — shaped by the island’s agricultural identity (Kauai produces taro, breadfruit, coffee, and some of Hawaii’s best tropical fruit), its relative isolation from mainland food trends, and a community that has maintained plate lunch culture and local diners alongside the resort restaurants. The geography divides eating into three zones: the south shore Poipu resort area, the east side hub around Lihue and Kapa’a, and the north shore stretching from Princeville to Hanalei. This guide covers the key restaurants in each zone with current prices as of 2026.
South Shore — Poipu
The Beach House Restaurant — 5022 Lawai Rd, Poipu. The most consistently recommended fine dining option on Kauai’s south coast, set on a low cliff above the ocean with an open-air design that works well at sunset. The menu focuses on local fish — opakapaka, ahi, shutome — with preparations that favor clean technique over elaborate presentation. Mains approximately $38–58. Reservations strongly recommended, particularly for the 5:30pm–6:30pm sunset window. Open daily for dinner.
Red Salt — 2251 Poipu Rd, inside the Koa Kea Hotel. One of Kauai’s more technically refined restaurants; smaller and more intimate than The Beach House. Locally sourced fish, produce from Kauai farms, and a wine list with more care than most resort restaurants. Mains approximately $32–55. Reservation recommended.
Merriman’s Fish House — 2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka, Poipu Gateway. Part of Peter Merriman’s Hawaii Regional Cuisine group (the same chef and sourcing philosophy behind Merriman’s Waimea on the Big Island and Merriman’s Maui). Local ahi, kampachi from Kona, Kauai cattle, and upcountry produce. Mains approximately $30–50. Reservation recommended.
Poipu Beach Broiler — 1941 Poipu Rd, Koloa. A reliable mid-range option in the Poipu area with a broad menu of burgers, steaks, and local fish. Mains approximately $22–38. Good family option when more polished restaurants have long waits.
Da Crack — 2827 Poipu Rd, Poipu (in a strip mall). A burrito counter by an ex-surfer, producing large, well-assembled burritos with locally sourced fillings. Burritos approximately $12–17. Counter service; no reservation. A reliable, inexpensive south shore option.
Lihue and East Side
Lihue is the island’s commercial and administrative center — the airport town. The east coast (Lihue through Wailua and Kapa’a) has the highest concentration of local non-resort dining on the island.
Tip Top Café and Bakery — 3173 Akahi St, Lihue. A Lihue institution open since 1916. Counter-service breakfast and lunch: macadamia nut pancakes, loco moco, saimin, and daily plate lunch specials. Plates approximately $9–15. The macadamia nut pancakes are the signature order. Open Tuesday–Sunday 6:30am–2pm. No reservation; cash preferred.
Hamura’s Saimin Stand — 2956 Kress St, Lihue. A counter-service Lihue institution operating since 1952. Saimin — a Hawaiian-style noodle soup with Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino influences — is the single menu item, with variations (wonton saimin, fried noodles, barbecue skewers on the side). Bowls approximately $8–12. Open daily for lunch and dinner; cash only. The dining counter and booths are original; the place has not changed significantly in decades.
Pono Market — 4-1300 Kuhio Hwy, Kapa’a. A deli counter and small grocery in central Kapa’a with rotating poke, kalua pig plates, and other local preparations. Poke approximately $14–18/pound. A reliable local lunch stop on the east coast. Open weekdays.
Kountry Kitchen — 4-1485 Kuhio Hwy, Kapa’a. A straightforward breakfast and lunch diner in Kapa’a. Large portions, affordable prices, and the kind of no-frills local operation that the resort south coast largely lacks. Plates approximately $10–16. Open daily for breakfast and lunch.
Olympic Café — 4-1354 Kuhio Hwy, Kapa’a. Eggs, pancakes, and sandwiches with outdoor patio seating on the main Kapa’a strip. Breakfast and lunch plates approximately $12–18. Consistent and popular with Kapa’a residents.
North Shore — Princeville, Hanalei, and Haena
The north shore has a limited but distinct restaurant scene — smaller in volume than the south coast but with a strong sense of the local community. Hanalei’s Ching Young Village shopping center is the hub of most of the activity.
Postcards Café — 5-5075 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei. The most creative and distinctive restaurant on the north shore. The menu skews vegetarian and seafood, drawing on Kauai-grown ingredients and a kitchen that applies more technique than the north shore’s casual reputation might suggest. Mains approximately $22–36. Reservation recommended for dinner — the small space fills quickly.
Hanalei Bread Company — 5-5161 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei. Artisan baked goods, good coffee, and breakfast items inside Hanalei’s Ching Young Village. Opens early. Sandwiches and pastries approximately $7–14. The most reliable breakfast stop for early-morning Ke’e Beach and Na Pali trail starts.
Wishing Well Shave Ice — 5-5190 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei. House-made syrups in distinctive flavors (lychee, passion fruit, Kauai-grown coffee), organic local ice cream base available. Shave ice approximately $5–8. The most-reviewed shave ice in Kauai. Expect a queue on busy summer afternoons.
Bubba’s Burgers — 5-5161 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei. A Kauai-founded burger chain with a strong local following. Straightforward burgers, fries, and shakes. Burgers approximately $9–14. Counter service; outdoor picnic tables. Open daily.
Pink’s Creamery — 4489 Aku Rd, Hanalei. An ice cream shop in Hanalei town with local flavors (Kauai cane sugar, Kauai coffee, tropical fruit). Scoops approximately $5–8. A quick, consistent stop after a north shore beach day.
Kauai Food Markets
Kauai Community Market — At the Kauai Community College, Lihue. Saturday mornings 9:30am–1pm. The best farmers market on the island — vendors bring Kauai-grown coffee, cacao products, tropical fruit, taro, fresh fish, and prepared foods including traditional Hawaiian dishes. Worth building a Saturday morning around.
Sunshine Farmers Markets — Multiple locations throughout the week: Kapa’a (Wednesday 3pm–5:30pm), Lihue (Fridays, times vary), Hanalei (Saturdays, check schedule). Produce-focused; shorter and more utilitarian than the Community Market but useful for assembling self-catering meals.
Living Foods Market — 4-831 Kuhio Hwy, Kapa’a. An organic and natural grocery with prepared foods, a juice bar, and a good selection of locally made products. Open daily.
Grocery and Self-Catering
Kauai has limited grocery infrastructure relative to the visitor population. The two main grocery chains are Foodland (multiple locations, reliable poke counter) and Times Supermarket (Lihue and Kapa’a). Big box retail is limited to a single Costco and Walmart in Lihue — both worth hitting early in a multi-day stay for basics.
Self-catering is particularly practical on the north shore, where restaurant options are limited and often busy. Groceries from Lihue or Kapa’a, a cooler, and beach food covers most north shore days effectively.
Practical Notes
- The Beach House and Red Salt: Both require advance reservation, particularly in peak summer. Call 1–2 weeks ahead for dinner.
- North shore food hours: North shore restaurants often close early (by 8–9pm) and have limited Sunday options. Plan accordingly if arriving late.
- Local vs. resort pricing: Lihue and Kapa’a restaurants run roughly 20–30% cheaper than comparable quality in Poipu resort restaurants. Hamura’s and Tip Top offer some of the island’s best local food at prices well below resort levels.
- Hanalei traffic: The north shore road has single-lane bridges and significant summer traffic. Allow extra time when driving to dinner reservations from the south coast.
