Kennedy Space Center sits on Merritt Island on Florida’s Atlantic coast, about 45 minutes east of Orlando, and it is one of the most compelling days out in the entire country. Unlike a theme park, nearly everything here is real - the Saturn V rocket that flew to the Moon, the Space Shuttle Atlantis suspended mid-mission, the launchpads visible in the distance where rockets still lift off today. This guide covers what each ticket tier includes, what to add on, and how to make the most of a full day at the complex.
Ticket Types and Prices
General Admission covers access to the Visitor Complex for the whole day, including all indoor exhibits, the two IMAX theatres, and the bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center. As of 2026, prices are approximately:
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult (12+) | from $75 |
| Child (3–11) | from $65 |
| Child under 3 | Free |
Prices may vary slightly by date and are higher on peak days. The official site and Klook both list KSC tickets - check current availability and prices on Klook, where you can also find combo tickets pairing KSC with Orlando theme parks.
Add-on experiences must be reserved separately and are priced on top of general admission:
| Experience | Approximate Price |
|---|---|
| Lunch with an Astronaut | from $90 adult / $65 child |
| Astronaut Training Experience (ATX) | from $175 |
| Launch Viewing Package | from $50 (when launches scheduled) |
| Up-Close Tour (KSC facilities bus tour) | from $30 |
The Lunch with an Astronaut programme is one of the most popular add-ons - you share a meal with a NASA astronaut and can ask questions directly. Availability is limited and it books out weeks in advance; this is worth reserving as soon as you confirm your visit date.
How to Book: Step by Step
- Go to kennedyspacecenter.com or check Klook for current prices and any bundled deals.
- Select your visit date. Pricing is date-specific; peak-period dates (summer, spring break, holiday weekends) are typically $5–$10 more than off-peak.
- Add experiences. Lunch with an Astronaut and ATX are in a separate section - add these before checkout if you want them, as slots fill independently.
- Choose a morning arrival time. KSC opens at 9 am and the bus to the Apollo/Saturn V Center operates on a schedule - arriving by 9:30 am gives you the most time and the bus without a long queue.
- Save your confirmation. Digital tickets via mobile are accepted at the gate; no need to print.
GetYourGuide also lists guided Kennedy Space Center tours from Orlando if you want a combined transport and entry package - useful if you don’t have a rental car.
What’s Included: The Main Highlights
Space Shuttle Atlantis is the centrepiece and the first thing you should see. The 184-foot orbiter hangs at a 43-degree angle as it appeared during re-entry, surrounded by exhibits that tell the story of its 33 missions. Allow at least 90 minutes here.
Apollo/Saturn V Center is reached by a 15-minute bus ride from the main complex (included in admission). It houses the only complete Saturn V rocket on public display - 363 feet long and lying horizontally overhead. The theatrical recreation of the Apollo 8 launch is one of the more affecting museum experiences anywhere in the US. Allow 2–3 hours.
Heroes & Legends traces the history of the astronaut corps from Mercury through the Shuttle era, using original artefacts and personal accounts. Worth 45–60 minutes.
IMAX Theatres run two different films on rotation; both are worth watching. Check the daily schedule on arrival.
Rocket Garden is an outdoor collection of original rockets from the early space program - Mercury, Gemini, and early Atlas and Titan vehicles. Good for photography and a natural midday break.
Best Time to Visit
Shoulder season (September to November, January to February) is the best time for shorter queues and cooler temperatures. Florida summer humidity is intense, and the outdoor sections of the complex become uncomfortable by midday.
Weekdays beat weekends consistently. Mid-week visits in January or February can feel almost quiet by comparison with a summer Saturday.
Arrive at opening (9 am). The Apollo/Saturn V bus has the longest queues mid-morning; heading there first or last (4 pm bus departures are often quieter) is a better strategy than attempting it at 11 am.
Getting There
Kennedy Space Center is on Merritt Island, accessible via the Beeline Expressway (SR 528) from Orlando, or north on US-1 from Melbourne. There is no public transport to the complex - a car or guided transfer is required.
Driving from Orlando: approximately 45–50 minutes without traffic (about 60 miles east).
Parking: approximately $10 per vehicle, paid on arrival.
GetYourGuide and Klook both list full-day transfers from Orlando hotels that include admission - worthwhile if you’re without a car or would rather skip the drive.
Combining KSC With the Rest of Your Florida Trip
Kennedy Space Center pairs well with a longer Orlando itinerary. If you’re spending multiple days in the area, Disney World tickets and Universal Studios tickets cover the two other headline attractions. Our Orlando city guide has neighbourhood breakdowns and hotel recommendations across all budgets, while things to do in Orlando covers the full range of options beyond the theme parks.
Tips From Regular Visitors
- Download the KSC app before you go - it shows live wait times for bus tours and IMAX screenings, so you can plan your day around quieter slots.
- The cafeteria options are functional but uninspiring. Pack snacks and a water bottle for the outdoor sections; the Lunch with an Astronaut programme is the only standout dining experience on site.
- Don’t underestimate the bus queue. The Apollo/Saturn V Center bus is the single biggest bottleneck. Either be at the bus stop when the complex opens, or go in the final hour before it closes at 4:30–5 pm (check seasonal hours).
- Children under 10 will need active engagement during the Apollo history sections - the narrative is adult-focused. The interactive simulators and the Shuttle exhibit hold younger attention much better.
- Launch days mean bigger crowds at the complex even if you’re not there for the launch itself. Check the KSC launch schedule when booking.
