Salt Lake City is a practical base for two very different travel styles: urban visitors exploring Temple Square, the Natural History Museum of Utah, and the arts district, and outdoor travelers using it as a gateway to world-class ski resorts and Utah’s national parks. The city itself is organized on a wide street grid set by early settlers - blocks are large and the layout is easy to navigate. Downtown clusters the main hotels near Temple Square and the Salt Palace Convention Center. Sugar House, about 3 miles east of downtown, is the independent neighborhood with the best local restaurant and bar scene. The East Side and Cottonwood Heights provide access to Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and their ski resorts.

Downtown and Temple Square
Downtown Salt Lake City covers roughly a one-mile radius around Temple Square and Main Street. The LDS Church Office Building, the Gateway shopping district, EnergySolutions Arena (NBA’s Jazz), and the Salt Palace Convention Center are all here. TRAX light rail connects downtown to Salt Lake City International Airport in about 20 minutes and runs south to Sandy and the University of Utah.
Grand America Hotel - 555 South Main Street, Downtown. The landmark luxury property in Salt Lake City, with 775 rooms across a full city block. Genuine old-world grandeur - Italian marble, wool carpets, and an outdoor heated pool. The Sunday brunch is the best in the city. From approximately $250/night as of 2026.
Kimpton Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City - 15 West 200 South, Downtown. A 225-room Kimpton property in a 1924 Beaux-Arts building, three blocks from Temple Square. Bold interiors, a wine hour, and a pet-friendly policy. Consistently one of the better mid-range value options downtown. From approximately $170/night.
The Little America Hotel - 500 South Main Street, Downtown. A 850-room property with tower and garden wing rooms - the garden rooms facing the heated outdoor pool are quieter and a good value. Reliable and well-priced for the location. From approximately $130/night.
Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City - 170 South West Temple, Downtown. Opened in 2022 and connected to the Salt Palace Convention Center via skywalk. The most modern large hotel in the city, with 888 rooms and panoramic Wasatch views from upper floors. From approximately $190/night.
Sugar House
Sugar House is Salt Lake City’s most independent neighborhood, about 3 miles east of downtown along 2100 South Street. The main commercial strip around 1100 East and 2100 South has the highest density of locally owned restaurants and bars in the city. Sugar House Park borders the neighborhood to the south, and Sugarhouse is a short drive from the foothills trailheads at Millcreek Canyon.
The Sugar House hotel supply is limited - most visitors in the neighborhood stay in smaller inns and extended-stay properties. For those prioritizing the local dining scene over central downtown access, the tradeoff is worthwhile: the drive downtown takes under 10 minutes, and parking is easier here than in the central hotel district.
By Travel Style
Families visiting Temple Square and the Natural History Museum of Utah (at the University of Utah, a TRAX ride from downtown) are best placed at the Little America or Hyatt Regency for space and value. Couples get more from the Kimpton Hotel Monaco’s design-forward rooms and Sugar House dining within Uber distance. Ski-focused visitors should prioritize proximity to the canyon bus stops, which run from several downtown transit hubs - any downtown hotel within walking distance of TRAX is well-positioned for a ski trip without a rental car.

Booking Tips
Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is a Delta hub and one of the better-connected regional airports in the West. TRAX light rail from the airport to downtown runs approximately every 15 minutes. Ski season (December-April) drives the highest hotel demand and rates - book 2-3 months ahead for Martin Luther King Weekend, Presidents Day Weekend, and the Feb-March spring break ski rush. Summer outdoor recreation (June-September) is the second busiest period. The Sundance Film Festival (held in Park City, about 35 minutes east) creates a brief January spike, with overflow visitors staying in Salt Lake City when Park City and Deer Valley accommodations fill.
