Denver has developed a distinct hotel culture around the Union Station revival - the renovated 1914 station is the social hub of LoDo and the landmark hotel occupying it has become one of the most distinctive properties in the Mountain West. Beyond LoDo, the River North Arts District (RiNo) and Cherry Creek each offer a different version of Denver: RiNo is younger, creative, and industrial-cool; Cherry Creek is polished and upscale. All three are worth knowing before you book.

LoDo and Union Station

LoDo (Lower Downtown) is the most walkable neighborhood in Denver and the right base for most visitors. The 16th Street Mall runs through it (free shuttle buses run the length). Larimer Square - Denver’s oldest block - has the best restaurant density in the city. Coors Field is walking distance for Rockies games.

The Crawford Hotel - 1701 Wynkoop Street, Union Station. Denver’s most architecturally significant hotel, occupying the upper floors of the 1914 Union Station terminal building. The Great Hall below is the city’s best communal bar space. 112 rooms; no pool. From approximately $250/night as of 2026.

The Maven Hotel - 1850 Wazee Street, Dairy Block. A 172-room boutique hotel within the Dairy Block development (a walkable block of restaurants, retail, and alley events). Strong rooftop bar. From approximately $200/night.

The Oxford Hotel - 1600 17th Street. Denver’s oldest hotel, open since 1891. The Cruise Room cocktail bar (a 1933 art-deco lounge) is a Denver landmark. From approximately $180/night - well-priced for the quality and history.

RiNo (River North Arts District)

RiNo is northeast of LoDo, a former industrial area transformed into Denver’s most vibrant arts and dining neighborhood. The Source Hotel and Market Hall anchors the district; Great Divide Brewing and Ratio Beerworks are nearby. It is younger and grittier than LoDo but has excellent restaurants.

The Ramble Hotel - 1280 25th Street, RiNo. A 50-room boutique property that has become the social center of RiNo. Death & Co cocktail bar on the ground floor is one of the best bars in Denver. Eclectic design, intimate atmosphere. From approximately $220/night.

The Source Hotel - 3330 Brighton Boulevard, RiNo. Connected to the Source Market Hall (one of Denver’s best food halls), with a rooftop with mountain views and a New Belgium brewery tap room. From approximately $180/night.

Cherry Creek

Cherry Creek is Denver’s upscale shopping and dining neighborhood, about 2 miles southeast of downtown. The Cherry Creek Shopping Center and the outdoor strip along 2nd Avenue have national and independent boutiques. It is quieter than LoDo and suited to visitors who prefer a more residential environment.

Halcyon, a Hotel in Cherry Creek - 245 Columbine Street, Cherry Creek. A boutique hotel with bikes for guest use, a strong culinary program, and rooftop bar with Front Range mountain views. From approximately $220/night.

Capitol Hill and Central Denver

Capitol Hill sits between downtown and Congress Park and has some of the oldest architecture in Denver. It is more affordable than LoDo with a mix of bars, coffee shops, and independent restaurants on Colfax Avenue.

The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa - 321 17th Street, Downtown. Denver’s most famous historic hotel, open since 1892. The eight-story atrium lobby is one of the great hotel interiors in the Mountain West. Afternoon tea served daily in the atrium. From approximately $230/night.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Denver for visitors?
LoDo (Lower Downtown) around Union Station is the strongest base for most visitors - walkable, well-served by the light rail to the airport, and close to Larimer Square, Coors Field, and the main restaurant and bar corridors. The Dairy Block (16th and Blake Streets) has become the city's most interesting boutique hotel and dining cluster within LoDo.
How far is Denver from the ski resorts?
Vail and Breckenridge are approximately 90 to 100 miles west of Denver (2 to 2.5 hours depending on I-70 conditions). Keystone and Arapahoe Basin are about 75 miles (1.5 to 2 hours). Winter driving on I-70 can be slow after heavy snowfall - plan extra time and check conditions. Some visitors stay in resort towns (Breckenridge, Frisco, Silverthorne) rather than Denver for ski trips.
When is the best time to visit Denver?
May through June and September through October offer the best weather with mild temperatures, lighter crowds, and lower hotel rates than summer. July and August are warm (25 to 35 Celsius) and popular but can have afternoon thunderstorms. Winter is good for ski access; downtown Denver itself gets less snow than popular perception suggests. Denver has over 300 sunny days per year.
