Kentucky Derby 2027

The Kentucky Derby is the first jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown, run on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2027 that falls on May 1. The race itself covers 1.25 miles (ten furlongs) and lasts approximately two minutes — hence the common nickname “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” The winner is draped in a blanket of red roses, earning the race its other name: the Run for the Roses.

The Kentucky Derby is not just a single race. Derby Week builds from the Tuesday before the main event, with undercard races, concerts, and the Kentucky Oaks on the Friday before — a major race for three-year-old fillies that has its own loyal following and draws six-figure crowds. The week culminates with Derby Day Saturday, when over 150,000 people pack Churchill Downs for what is as much a social occasion as a sporting event.

Tickets and sections

Churchill Downs is divided into a hierarchy of ticketing sections that significantly affects the experience. Infield tickets are the most affordable entry point (historically in the $50-100 range before fees), placing you inside the track for a party atmosphere with limited views of the race itself. Reserved grandstand seats and box seats in the upper sections give better racing views. Trackside hospitality packages and suites run into the thousands. Book as early as possible; popular sections sell out within hours of going on sale.

Dress code and traditions

Derby Day has a strong tradition of formal dress, particularly in the grandstands and clubhouse: women traditionally wear elaborate hats, and suits or sport coats are standard for men. The infield has a more relaxed atmosphere. The official cocktail of the Derby is the Mint Julep — bourbon, mint, sugar, and crushed ice served in a souvenir tin cup.

Getting to Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs is located about 5 miles south of downtown Louisville. Rideshare and taxi are the most straightforward options on Derby Day, though surge pricing applies. Dedicated shuttle services from downtown hotels are available and worth booking in advance. Driving and parking at the track is possible but requires purchasing a parking pass separately.

Louisville itself rewards an extra day or two: the Louisville Slugger Museum, the bourbon distillery tours along the Urban Bourbon Trail, and the Muhammad Ali Center are all worthwhile. Check availability at Louisville hotels many months ahead — the city fills completely for Derby Week.
