Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
Sky Harbor has three active terminals: Terminal 2 (closed for redevelopment), Terminal 3, and Terminal 4 (the main terminal handling the majority of flights, including all international). The PHX Sky Train automated people mover connects all terminals to the light rail network.
Valley Metro Light Rail (via PHX Sky Train)
The most affordable and often fastest way to central Phoenix is a two-step journey: PHX Sky Train to the light rail station, then Valley Metro Light Rail into the city.
Step 1 — PHX Sky Train: A free automated people mover runs from Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 to the 44th Street/Washington light rail station. Runs 24 hours a day, every few minutes. No fare required.
Step 2 — Valley Metro Light Rail: From 44th Street/Washington, board the light rail heading westbound toward downtown Phoenix. Stops include:
- Washington/Central Ave (downtown Phoenix) — approximately 6 minutes from 44th St
- City Hall / Washington — 7 minutes
- Civic Space Park — 9 minutes
- Tempe (eastbound from 44th St) — approximately 5–10 minutes to Tempe Town Lake area

Journey time: Approximately 20–25 minutes from any terminal to downtown Phoenix, including the Sky Train connection.
Hours: Light rail runs approximately 4am to midnight on weekdays, with extended hours on weekends for events. The PHX Sky Train runs 24 hours.
This is an excellent connection — the Sky Train is fast and frequent, and the light rail deposits you in the heart of downtown Phoenix efficiently.
Taxi
Licensed taxis queue at the Ground Transportation area on the arrivals level of Terminal 3 and Terminal 4. A taxi coordinator manages the stand at peak times.

Tips for Smooth Phoenix Airport Transfers
Use Valley Metro Light Rail for downtown and Tempe. At $2 for a day pass and 20–25 minutes to downtown, the light rail is exceptional value. The Sky Train connection is free, fast, and runs 24 hours — there is no reason to pay for a taxi or rideshare if you are heading to central Phoenix or ASU/Tempe.
Take a taxi or rideshare to Scottsdale. The light rail does not serve Scottsdale, and the two are different cities. A rideshare to Scottsdale Old Town is typically $25–$40 — manageable. North Scottsdale resorts (Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Boulders, etc.) are 20+ miles from the airport; consider a pre-booked private transfer for a fixed rate.
Book in advance during major events. The Valley hosts some of the US’s biggest annual events: the WM Phoenix Open draws 700,000+ visitors in late January/early February; Spring Training fills the Valley through March; the Cactus Bowl and Fiesta Bowl bring NFL playoff atmosphere. During these weeks, rideshare surge pricing at Sky Harbor can be extreme. A pre-booked private transfer at a fixed rate is the cleaner option.
International arrivals use Terminal 4. All international flights arrive at Terminal 4 (the main terminal). US Customs and immigration processing times at PHX are typically 30–60 minutes for international arrivals. Terminal 4 connects directly to the PHX Sky Train to the light rail network.
