Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is one of the closest major US airports to its city centre — approximately 7 miles southwest of Center City, making the drive or transit journey notably shorter than comparable airports in other major cities. American Airlines operates its largest hub here, and the airport connects Philadelphia to virtually every US domestic market and dozens of international destinations.
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
PHL has seven terminals (A-West, A-East, B, C, D, E, F) arranged in a linear configuration. International arrivals clear US Customs in Terminal A, then proceed to baggage claim and Ground Transportation. Domestic arrivals exit directly to Ground Transportation on the arrivals level.
SEPTA Airport Line
The SEPTA Airport Line is the quickest, most reliable, and most affordable way into Center City. Trains stop at all PHL terminals (A, B/C, D/E, F/G — check terminal signage for your closest station) and run directly to:
- 30th Street Station (University City) — approximately 20 minutes
- Suburban Station (Centre Square / City Hall area) — approximately 25 minutes
- Jefferson Station (Market East / Chinatown) — approximately 28 minutes
- Temple University — approximately 33 minutes
Cost (as of 2026): Approximately $7 each way. Purchase at the station using a SEPTA Key card or single-ride ticket from machines. SEPTA Key is the reloadable card that also works on buses and the subway.
Frequency: Approximately every 30 minutes throughout the day, 5am–midnight. Not 24-hour service — late-night arrivals after midnight will need a taxi or rideshare.
The Airport Line is entirely underground and at-grade rail — no I-95 or I-76 congestion. It is consistently faster than driving during peak hours.
Taxi
Licensed taxis queue at the Ground Transportation Center, accessible via the pedestrian bridge from the baggage claim level of each terminal. Follow “Ground Transportation” signs.
Typical fares (as of 2026):
- Center City Philadelphia: approximately $30–$45
- Old City / Society Hill: approximately $32–$48
- University City: approximately $20–$30
- Center City to North Philadelphia / Temple area: approximately $35–$50
All fares are metered. Tip is standard at 15–20%. Avoid unmarked vehicles soliciting rides inside the terminal.
Rideshare (Uber / Lyft)
Rideshare pickups operate from the Ground Transportation Center — the same building as taxis, accessible via pedestrian bridge from baggage claim. App directions will assign you a specific zone number. Match the number in your app to signs in the Ground Transportation Center.
Typical fares to Center City (as of 2026):
- UberX / Lyft: approximately $20–$35 off-peak
- Surge pricing during Eagles game days, conventions at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, or peak Friday evenings can raise fares to $55–$80
The short 7-mile distance to Center City means even surged rideshare fares are relatively manageable compared to other major cities.
Private Transfer
Pre-booked private transfers offer fixed pricing and meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall — avoiding the walk to the Ground Transportation Center with heavy bags. Sedan transfers from PHL to Center City run approximately $55–$80 as of 2026. Book through [/go/transfers-usa] (Kiwitaxi) for vetted operators with flight tracking.
Private vehicles are particularly useful for early morning or late-night arrivals when SEPTA is not running and surge pricing on rideshares can be significant.
SEPTA Bus
SEPTA bus routes serve the airport and surrounding Southwest Philadelphia neighbourhoods, but for visitors heading to Center City, the Airport Line train is faster and simpler. Bus routes are most useful if you are staying in a neighbourhood not directly served by the Airport Line stops.
Comparing Your Options
| Method | Cost (approx.) | Journey time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEPTA Airport Line | $7 | 25 min | Best option; avoids all traffic |
| Taxi (metered) | $30–$45 + tip | 20–40 min | Traffic-dependent on I-95 |
| Rideshare | $20–$35 | 20–40 min | Surge pricing on event days |
| Private transfer | $55–$80 | 20–40 min | Fixed rate, meet-and-greet |
Costs and times as of 2026. I-95 traffic through Southwest Philadelphia can add 15–30 minutes during peak periods.
Tips for Smooth Philadelphia Airport Transfers
Use SEPTA to Center City — the value is exceptional. At $7 for a 25-minute journey into the heart of the city, the Airport Line is one of the best-value airport rail connections in the US. The train stops within walking distance of major Center City hotels, the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and Philadelphia’s historic district.
Note the SEPTA station platform for your terminal. PHL’s terminals are spread across a long apron, and each has its own stop on the Airport Line. Your terminal determines which stop is closest. Signs in the terminal direct you to the correct overpass walkway to the SEPTA station.
PHL is close — rideshares are affordable even with surge. Unlike airports 20–30 miles from their cities, PHL’s 7-mile proximity means surge pricing rarely pushes fares above $70, even during peak Eagles or Phillies traffic. Rideshare is a viable option any time of day.
International arrivals: allow 45–90 minutes. Customs and immigration queues at PHL’s Terminal A-West can be long on transatlantic arrivals. If someone is meeting you, have them wait at Arrivals rather than in the SEPTA station concourse, where they cannot wait after the fare gates.
Book a private transfer for multi-city group itineraries. Philadelphia sits between New York and Washington DC, making it a common stop on multi-city itineraries. A pre-booked private transfer sets the right tone for the visit and handles the logistics cleanly, especially for groups continuing to the city’s historic district or Penn’s Landing.
