Eugene Oregon: Saturday Market, Willamette Wine & Nike
Eugene, Oregon, USA travel guide: Saturday Market, McKenzie River, Crater Lake day trips, Willamette wine country, and the birthplace of Nike.
Guides for Eugene
Eugene is Oregon’s second city - a university town of approximately 175,000 at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, sitting between the Coast Range and the Cascade foothills. The Saturday Market, the McKenzie River corridor, and the University of Oregon all give the city a stronger identity than comparably sized American cities. It works best as a base: Crater Lake is 140 miles east, the Oregon Coast is 60 miles west, and Willamette Valley wine country extends 90 miles north.
The running culture is genuine - Pre’s Trail and the Willamette River paths form a substantial recreational running network, and Hayward Field on the UO campus is among the most famous track and field venues in the United States. The food scene is solid rather than outstanding, with concentration around the 5th Street Public Market and the university corridor.
Getting to Eugene
By air: Eugene Airport (EUG) is 7 miles northwest of downtown with limited direct connections from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, Denver, and Las Vegas. Portland International Airport (PDX, 110 miles north) has substantially more connections and is accessible by Amtrak (2.5 hours) or car (2 hours).
By train: Amtrak’s Coast Starlight (Seattle–Los Angeles) and Cascades (Eugene–Vancouver BC) both stop at Eugene Station (433 Willamette St). The Cascades service is reliable and the train ride from Portland is pleasant.
By car: Portland is 110 miles north via I-5, about 2 hours. Crater Lake is 140 miles east via OR-58 and US-97. The Oregon Coast (Florence) is 60 miles west via OR-126.
Within Eugene: Lane Transit District (LTD) covers the city, including the EmX Bus Rapid Transit on Franklin Boulevard connecting downtown to the university. The city is cycling-friendly with a well-developed path network.
Neighborhoods
Downtown: The central core between 6th and 11th Avenues and Oak to Pearl Streets - the Saturday Market (8th and Oak), the 5th Street Public Market, and the main restaurant concentration. The City Hall area and the Hult Center for the Performing Arts are here.
University District: The UO campus (1585 E 13th Ave) and the surrounding area on 13th Street - the Jordan Schnitzer Museum, Hayward Field, and the commercial strip along 13th Street east of the campus.
Whiteaker (Whit): The neighborhood northwest of downtown between Blair and Chambers Streets - Eugene’s most independent-minded neighborhood; home to Ninkasi Brewing, several food cart pods, and a community garden culture.
South Hills: The residential hills southeast of downtown above Hendricks Park; the park itself is the primary draw, with old-growth forest and the large rhododendron collection.
Things to Do
The Saturday Market (8th and Oak, Saturdays April–November) is a consistent and free highlight - Oregon’s oldest outdoor craft market with 150+ artisan vendors and an adjacent food cart pod. Hendricks Park (2200 Summit Ave) has 78 acres of old-growth Douglas fir and the largest public rhododendron garden in the United States (peak bloom late April through mid-May).
The UO campus has two free museums: the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (strong in Asian art and American photography) and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History (Oregon’s state natural history museum, including the world’s oldest known shoes). The McKenzie River corridor (50 miles east via OR-126) is the premier day-trip hiking and whitewater rafting destination.
