Corpus Christi: Padre Island, Lexington & Beaches

Corpus Christi travel guide: USS Lexington, Texas State Aquarium, Padre Island National Seashore, Gulf beaches, and barrier island coastline.

Guides for Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is a Gulf Coast port city of approximately 315,000, built around its natural bay and the barrier islands that protect it. The USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium anchor the tourist waterfront on North Shoreline Boulevard, but the defining draw is the coastline: Padre Island National Seashore stretches 70 miles of undeveloped Gulf barrier island - the longest in the United States - and Gulf water temperatures reach swimming conditions reliably from June through September.

The city is compact around its bay, with limited walkable character but strong outdoor access. Birding is a serious draw - Corpus Christi is on the Central Flyway and the area hosts multiple species during spring and fall migration. Windsurfing and kiteboarding are practiced year-round given consistent Gulf winds.

Getting to Corpus Christi

By air: Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP, 10 miles from downtown) serves limited direct routes from Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and Phoenix. San Antonio (145 miles northwest) is the nearest major airport with significantly more connections - approximately 2.5 hours by car via I-37.

By car: San Antonio is 145 miles northwest via I-37, approximately 2.5 hours. Houston is 210 miles northeast via US-59/I-69, approximately 3.5 hours. Laredo is 160 miles west via US-59.

Within Corpus Christi: The city is car-dependent. The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (The B) operates local bus service, but beaches and most attractions require a car. Rideshare is available throughout the city.

Neighborhoods

North Shoreline: The primary tourist waterfront strip - USS Lexington, Texas State Aquarium, and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History sit along North Shoreline Boulevard facing Corpus Christi Bay. The Downtown Marina is adjacent.

Downtown/Water Street: The commercial and entertainment center. Water Street Market (309 N Water St) is the concentrated restaurant and bar district on the bay edge. The Heritage Park historic district (Fitzgerald St and Hughes St) preserves several 19th-century houses.

South Side: The main residential and retail corridor along South Padre Island Drive (SPID, TX-358) - chain hotels, shopping, and restaurants. Most budget accommodations are here.

North Padre Island: Accessible via the JFK Causeway (TX-358), the northern portion of the barrier island has developed beach access, vacation rentals, and the entrance to Padre Island National Seashore.

Things to Do

The USS Lexington (WWII aircraft carrier museum, 2914 N Shoreline Blvd) and Texas State Aquarium (2710 N Shoreline Blvd) are the waterfront anchors - both are substantially better than average for their categories. Padre Island National Seashore, accessible free, provides 70 miles of undeveloped Gulf coastline. Mustang Island State Park has five miles of beach with camping.

The Art Museum of South Texas (1902 N Shoreline Blvd, Philip Johnson building) is small but architecturally notable. The South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center (5 miles south) is strongest in spring bloom. Guided dolphin cruises and deep-sea fishing charters depart from the downtown marina area regularly.
