Columbia is South Carolina’s capital and home to the University of South Carolina - a mid-sized city with straightforward strengths: Congaree National Park is 20 miles away (and consistently undervisited), Riverbanks Zoo is one of the Southeast’s best, and the Five Points and Vista neighborhoods provide workable dining and nightlife. The city is not a destination in itself for most visitors, but it’s a stronger stop than its reputation suggests.

Congaree National Park
Congaree National Park (100 National Park Rd, Hopkins - 20 miles southeast via SC-48) is among the least-crowded national parks in the eastern United States, protecting the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the country. Entry is free.
The Boardwalk Loop (2.4 miles, fully accessible, flat) starts from the Harry Hampton Visitor Center and winds through the floodplain forest on an elevated wooden boardwalk. Loblolly pines and bald cypress trees here reach champion dimensions - several are national record-holders for their species. The forest floods regularly; boardwalk sections can be partially submerged after heavy rain, though the main loop remains accessible.
Weston Lake Loop (4.4 miles, moderate) extends beyond the boardwalk into the interior, passing Weston Lake - a Congaree River oxbow with egrets and wood ducks. The Kingsnake Trail (11 miles, flat) is the longest day hike in the park.
The park’s firefly display in late May (synchronous fireflies, Photinus carolinus) draws a lottery-ticketed crowd - registration opens in April via recreation.gov. Canoe tours of Cedar Creek run October through May; ranger-led tours require advance booking.
Riverbanks Zoo & Garden
Riverbanks Zoo & Garden (500 Wildlife Pkwy) is the city’s primary family destination and consistently ranked among the Southeast’s top zoological facilities. Adults approximately $20, children (3–12) approximately $17 (as of 2026). Open daily 9am–5pm.
The zoo’s 170 acres hold approximately 2,000 animals. The gorilla habitat and African savanna (giraffes, zebras, rhinos visible in open space) are the strongest animal exhibits. The bouldering rock and reptile complex are also well-done. On the far side of the Saluda River (accessed by footbridge) is the botanical garden section - 70 acres of themed gardens with the ruins of a 19th-century canal system visible along the river.
The Vista District
The Vista (between the State House and Gervais Street Bridge) is Columbia’s main arts and dining district - a former warehouse area with galleries, upscale restaurants, and the Columbia Museum of Art.
Columbia Museum of Art (1515 Main St) holds the Kress Collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, plus American decorative arts and a strong contemporary collection. Adults approximately $12, free for USC students (as of 2026). Open Tuesday–Sunday.
Gervais Street and Huger Street have the Vista’s best restaurant concentration:
- Motor Supply Co. Bistro (920 Gervais St) - locally focused, farm-to-table; one of Columbia’s best fine-dining options
- Craft & Vine (821 Gervais St) - craft beer bar with a well-curated tap list and small plates
- Bourbon (1214 Main St) - bourbon bar with a wide American whiskey selection
South Carolina State House
The South Carolina State House (1100 Gervais St) is a National Historic Landmark built in 1851–1903, with an Italian Renaissance dome visible from most of downtown. Guided tours of the interior run Monday through Friday (free); the grounds feature 15 monuments and a Confederate memorial that has been a subject of ongoing public debate. The six bronze stars on the building’s west facade mark where cannon fire from Sherman’s army struck the building in February 1865.
The State House grounds (about 4 acres) are one of the more pleasant urban green spaces in Columbia and worth a 20-minute walking tour of the exterior monuments.
Five Points and University Neighborhood
Five Points (Harden at Devine and Greene) is the city’s most active nightlife and casual dining neighborhood, adjacent to the USC campus. Weekend evenings draw large university crowds; weekday evenings are easier to navigate.
Notable stops:
- Devine Cinnamon Roll Deli (2803 Rosewood Dr, nearby Rosewood neighborhood) - the standard Columbia breakfast recommendation, with large house-made cinnamon rolls
- Yesterday’s Restaurant & Tavern (2030 Devine St) - a Columbia institution since 1974; dependable burgers and pub food
- New Brookland Tavern (122 State St, West Columbia) - the best independent music venue in the metro area for local and touring indie/rock acts
Lake Murray
Lake Murray (approximately 15 miles west via US-378) is a 50,000-acre reservoir with swimming beaches, marina access, and boat rentals. Dreher Island State Park (3677 State Park Rd, Prosperity) on the lake has cabins and a public boat launch - approximately $7 day use fee per vehicle. The lake is primarily a summer activity; water temperatures are warm from June through September.
